In 1961, Jerry Bails and Roy Thomas launched Alter Ego, the first fanzine devoted to comic books and their colorful history. This very special collection, published by Bill Schelly's own Hamster Press, was the first to collect some of that amazing material. It appeared in 1997 with very limited distribution. Packed with informative and fun articles and art, all from the original 11 issues from 1961-78. All new introductions by Julius Schwartz, AND Jerry Bails AND Roy Thomas! Then it's packed with articles on Golden Age and Silver Age heroes, new artwork by a host of pros and fans, vintage interviews with Gil Kane, Bill Everett, and Joe Kubert and much more.
You'll find specialty artwork by Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Moebius, Wally Wood, John Buscema, Marie Severin, Bill Everett, Russ Manning, Curt Swan, and a host of others. Here are super-hero parodies by Len Brown, Marie Severin, Wally Wood, Roy Thomas, Ronn Foss and others, including The Bestest League of America, AE's spoof on the original JLA by Roy Thomas story AND art!
Fan artist Ron Foss offers up two stories of his famous hero, The Eclipse. Otto Binder writes about his own adventures writing for Captain Marvel and DC's Superman titles.
Here are the results for fandom's very first annual awards, the Alley Awards, for comics published in 1961 and 1962! It’s fascinating.

There's also "The Reincarnation of The Spectre." "Superman South" about comics south of the border, by Fred Patten. And the letters, from pros and famous fans, as this was THE gathering place for early comics fandom.
Also new in this collection are four wrap-up overviews: "Alter Ego: The Comic Book," "Four Decades of Alter Ego," "Where are They Now?" and a complete index with more illustrations.
A companion volume, called The Best of Alter Ego Volume 2, was published by Twomorrows in 2013.
