In 2031, along with Raul, the smartest talking cat alive, and Luther Ironheart, the stupidest robot ever, and surrounded by a bevy of the most beautiful women of the 21st century, Flagg faces an uphill battle protecting and defending the American way of life...or rather, what's left of it. As a former porn star-turned-cop, he is as unorthodox a good guy as you've ever seen. This sexy, violent and scarily prescient look at the future is my personal favorite work ever from Chaykin, done for First Comics way back in 1983.
This was a major departure from comics as we knew them in the eighties. Chaykin was also channeling Jim Steranko at times here, with simply amazing panel work and innovative, exciting art and storytelling. This was hugely popular when it first appeared. This collection was done in 2008, and we carried it back then. Now we found it from a remainder dealer, so we can offer it again at half price.
Chaos is the new world order. Worldwide nuclear and chemical conflict, environmental disasters and nationalism have driven the United States government — and the corporations that own it — to the relative safety of the planet Mars. The government and its parent companies, now renamed the PLEX, run things in absentia from the red planet. The only real law on Earth is enforced by the Plexus Rangers. Reuben Flagg was the star of a television series dramatizing the fictional adventures of one such Plexus Ranger. When Flagg was replaced by a hologram, he was drafted into the Plexus Rangers and assigned to protect the city of Chicago!.
If you want more convincing that this deserves your attention: Pulitzer-prize winning author Michael Chabon offers a lengthy three-page introduction to this important collection:
"Chaykin is fundamentally a romancer; "a storyteller" as the cliché has it, indicted, self-aware, embittered, or corrupted, his heroes remain heroes, and the stories he tells never stray very far from their roots in Sabatini Novels [i.e. The Sea Hawk], The Shadow and Doc Savage, Chandler, Hammett, the films of Michael Curtiz. True friendship, true love, dying for a belief, self-sacrafice, even American ideals--such things, though he almost hates to admit it, are possible in Chaykin's work."
