- Full Description
Probably the finest book yet on this amazing artist. 200 superbly reproduced full color plates span his entire career, from his scathing anti-Axis Colliers magazine covers to his illustrated books, special projects and far more. Arranged by topic, essays accompany the artwork to examine all the subject areas, periods, and styles in which Arthur Szyk worked, timeline, exhibition history, and complete bibliography.
Essays by scholars Irvin Ungar who co-published the book, internationally renowned Holocaust historian Michael Berenbaum, former director of the Museum Program at the National Endowment for the Arts Tom L. Freudenheim, and Harvard art historian James Kettlewell.
The preface is by Steven Heller, art director, journalist, critic, author, and editor who specializes on topics related to graphic design. Louise Mirrer, President and CEO of the New York Historical Society, has written the foreword.
Today Szyk is best known for his virulent works from the 1940's, depicting the Nazis, Hirohito and Mussolini in no uncertain terms as evil incarnate. Many of these were collected in 1941 in The New Order, which remains highly collectible to this day. But he also illustrated The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Hans Anderson's Fairy Tales, The Canterbury Tales, The Visual History of Nations, The Book of Ruth, the Book of Job, Arabian Night's Entertainment and in 1946 The Heritage Press issued a collection of his artwork, Ink and Blood, in a limited signed edition. These days this sells for upwards of $2000 in nice condition.
But even that said, Szyk is so much more. A miniaturist, his highly detailed illustrations are a wonder to behold. He created stamps, illustrations of Polish and American history, broadsides and prints. He was also a brilliant colorist, and only the finest printing, like we have here, can do his highly detailed work its full justice. Also here are preliminary pencilled works, inked pieces and other works showing his artistic progress as well as revealing previously unpublished works.
"Above all else, Arthur Szyk: Soldier in Art /em> is a book I want you, the reader and viewer, to feel—to experience Arthur Szyk the man and his art and his creative genius as he has never been felt before in his totality." -Irvin Ungar
