A fine press, slipcased hardcover edition lavishly illustrated in color by Yuko Shimizu (DC Comics' The Unwritten). Oscar Wilde wrote these fairy tales between 1888-1891. This volume includes all five stories from The Happy Prince, and the four published in House of Pomegranates. The deluxe slipcase is die-cut, foil blocked, and debossed to create a three dimensional impression of Yuko's beautiful linework, matching the other Beehive editions. From 2009 and 2015 Shimizu created over 70 covers for the DC Comic Series The Unwritten, for which she received a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators.
This edition is a companion to, and matches in size and format, two more books in the Beehive Books Illuminated Editions series: The Island of Doctor Moreau, illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz, and The Willows and Other Nightmares, illustrated by Paul Pope. All are designed by Maëlle Doliveux.
Wilde's stories include The Happy Prince, the Nightingale and the Rose, The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend, The Remarkable Rocket from the first book and The Young King, The Birthday of Infanta. The Fisherman and His Soul, and The Star Child from the second.
Shimizu began illustrating professionally in 2003 soon after she completed her master's degree. Her first client was The Village Voice. She soon added The New York Times, The New Yorker and the Financial Times. Between 2007 and 2010, Shimizu illustrated 33 CD insert covers for Now Hear This, which was a recommended music listening list published by the UK magazine The World. Covers in this series always depicted a woman and a music theme.
In 2009, Shimizu was named among the 100 Japanese people the world most respects by Newsweek Japan.
On The Unwritten, Shimizu displayed many of the stylistic trademarks that would later define her as an innovator in the field of illustration, by setting the mood of the big picture of the story.
Shimizu has also illustrated for clients such as the Library of Congress, Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, MTV, Target, National Public Radio, Time, Rolling Stone, GQ, and many more.
In 2018, Shimizu won the Hamilton King Award, considered by many to be the most prestigious award in illustration. She is in Spectrum Volume 25.
