- Full Description
"A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse — and Thou, Beside me, singing in the Wilderness," is only one of the memorable verses from Edward FitzGerald's translation of poems by the 11th century Persian sage Omar Khayyám. This magnificent version of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám reproduces the edition published by Hodder & Stoughton in London in 1909, in which the timeless poems are accompanied by full-color images by Golden Age illustrator Edmund Dulac. Critics and collectors have long debated which book represents the peak of Dulac's career, and many agree that his affinity for Persian art makes this gloriously illustrated volume a strong contender.
Sumptuous red cloth, profusely decorated with gold embossed design work and an inset Dulac illustration, die-cut to create a perfect rendition with the same classic feeling as the original 1909 edition, which was reprinted many times, being one of the most widely read and wildly popular books of its day. Very handsome, with superlative work by Dulac that ranges from decadent hedonism, to angels and demons, beautiful harem girls to lovely princesses and lovers, all with an exotic eastern feel of mysticism and romance.
