Initially working in comic books in the 1950s, including work for EC's sci-fi titles with Williamson and Frazetta, Roy Krenkel soon moved into digest and book illustration, and finally fine art and book covers. Commissioned to draw the covers for the Ace Burroughs paperbacks, he couldn't keep up and brought friend Frank Frazetta in to help--and thereby began Frank's cover career! Seemingly never on the A-list, he nonetheless produced some exquisite work and it's nicely featured here, with superb reproduction.

This includes many of his best ERB pieces, from the original art itself. Plus tributes by his friends and fellow artists, including Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, Bill Pearson, Angelo Torres and a great quote from fan Harlan Ellison. Nudes, unpublished watercolors, sketches, Krenkel was an artist's artist, and loved what he did. His "Loathsome Lore" from Creepy is some of the finest line work from the Warren magazines, here again from the original artwork. It's delicious!

He deserves a full blown coffee table book on his work. But until we see that, this is really a sharp collection, with gems on page after page, from the Mars novels (he did many of the ERB covers with John Carter and Dejah Thoris), a rare Wizard of Oz cover, the Otis Aldebert Kline Prince of Peril series, Donald Grant's Sowers of the Thunder and The Road to Azrael, two Robert E. Howard novels he illustrated. There's a lot here, and worth every dollar.

Influenced by early masters J. Allen St. John, J.C. Coll, Norman Lindsay and Franklin Booth, Krenkel inspired fantasy artists himself with his portrayals of futuristic cities, prehistoric beasts, Mongol hordes, jungle men, and bodacious beauties. One of those books that every fan should own.

Note: This is an out of print, used and/or rare book. This is not in "mint" condition. Very Fine. Two very small scratches on the back of the slipcase
