This wonderful book contains stunning reproductions taken directly from Anderson's original paintings, as well as reference photos, rare proof sheets of pulp covers, and much more.

Anderson may have done more iconic, highly-prized comic and pulp covers than just about anyone in the 1940s and early 1950s, but unlike Saunders, Kelly Freas and others, he has never been nearly as well recognized—maybe because he left the field in the 1950s. Many of his comic book covers are true pre-code icons, such as Amazing Adventures, Weird Thrillers, and the true classic, Eerie Adventures. And Crusader from Mars!!

But his pulp work is also filled with iconic covers, images often picked out as the best examples of this title or that genre. For example, the cover of this book, from a Planet Stories cover, is one you see often. And did you think it was by Kelly Freas? I did.

He also did the wonderful run of Two Complete Science Fiction Adventures, several superb action covers for the Wings pulp title, great adventure covers for Northwest Romances, Indian Stories, Best Western, several sports titles, Western Novels, Complete Western, and for Fiction House’s long running title, Action Stories, with more great covers on those, in all genres.

Plus Hollywood Detective, Private Detective, Speed Detective, Super Detective, Spicy Adventure, Detective Book, even the rare Black Hood Detective.

And it’s written by David Saunders, the son of Norman Saunders and today’s foremost expert on pulp artists. David paints a wonderful picture of life as an artist in the 1930s and 40s. Anderson was in the right place at the right time. His first job was at Federal Artists School, then at Fawcett as they were doing racy early pulps. Norman Saunders finally coaxed him into moving to New York with his model fiancee, soon to be his wife. He fell in with Harry Donenfeld and did a great number of the steamiest Spicy covers before Donenfeld left the pulp field to concentrate on DC Comics.

After the war began, he worked overtime to get more covers in the hopper, was rejected by the army but joined the navy to work in their graphics departments. After the war it was back full-steam to the pulps, as the genre got one last good run before drying up in the mid-1950s--his last hurrah was the final covers for many of the Fiction House titles, some of his best work, and for the Ziff-Davis comics...then he left the field to move upstate and do sign painting and work now lost to the ages.

Don’t miss this!
