- Full Description
DetailsWilliam Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a highly important and influential French academic painter. He was the most renowned, lauded and loved artist of his day. His originality and creativity were matched by his technical excellence. Originally published as volume one in the two-volume boxed set, alongside the catalogue raisonne, this biography has now been published separately, with 350 large exquisitely reproduced full color illustrations.
We've handled every book on Bouguereau over the last years and this is clearly the finest one ever done. Not only does this have his most famous paintings, wonderful pictures of nudes, angels, mythological scenes, and religious works, but every picture is beautifully reproduced, large size (many full page). Every one is annotated with full details. The extra 180 photographs give you an intimate look at the artist, his friends, colleagues, family and professional duties and events. For instance, when author Victor Hugo died, the President of France asked him to preside over the funeral of his friend and colleague.
His company was sought by the most famous writers and entertainers, the wealthiest captains of industry and the most powerful politicians. But throughout it all, he continued to produce magnificent work, many as widely seen today as works by Maxfield Parrish and Alma Tadema, who were not nearly as adulated in their own time. His work in fact is a close forerunner of both these artists, particularly Alma Tadema. Both artists became masters of the nude, as well as highly detailed and realistic clothing, whether contemporary or from ancient times.
