Almost Gone! By Trina Robbins. Art by Barbara Hall, Jill Elgin, Lily Renee and Fran Hopper. During the Golden Age, publishers offered titles supporting the war effort — presenting fighting men and their feminine counterparts — babes in arms! Comic books during this period featured US servicewomen fighting all of the Axis bad guys and gave several of the most noteworthy women artists of the era opportunities to create action-packed, adventure-filled, four-color stories. Short bios, original art and photos of each artist are followed by 21 complete stories in full color culled from Speed Comics, Green Hornet, Wings, Fight, etc.

Short bios, original art and photos of each artist are followed by 21 complete stories in full color culled from Speed Comics, Green Hornet, Wings, Fight , etc.

Now for the first time renowned pop-culture historian Trina Robbins assembles comic book stories by artists Barbara Hall (3 Girl Commandos, all from 1942), Jill Elgin (6 Girl Commandos from 1944-46), Lily Renee (4 Jane Martin stories from Wings and 4 fom Fight), and Fran Hopper (4 Jane Martin stories from Wings, 1946-47). Together with insightful commentary and loads of documentary extras to create the definitive book chronicling the work of these important Golden Age artists. And the stories themselves, many from the notorious Fiction House that instructed their artists to get in lots of leg, lots of cleavage, and lots of action. Many are reprinted here for the very first time.

Now for my one caveat--I like the material and the stories, but I don't like the price. I think Hermes has taken a modest book and priced it as if it was a major art book. We're discounting this at $10 off, so that helps a bit. But I have to be honest with you--this is why I can only give this my recommended endorsement.
