BATMAN THRILLKILLER

Availability: In stock

$16.99
Collects Thrillkiller #1-3 and Thrillkiller '62, 1997-98. Highly Recommended. By Howard Chaykin. Art by Dan Brereton. Eisner-nominated. Behind-the-scenes unpublished artwork and new Introduction by Chaykin. The year is 1961. The gorgeous Barbara Gordon is Batgirl and her lover is Robin, sans his costume, clad in a cool bomber jacket. And he's a man here, at peak form and out to kill, literally, the killers of his circus-performing parents. A very un-Batman-like story. It’s a grim tale, as Chaykin says, more of a crime novel than a conventional Batman story. It's rich and moody and sexy and very offbeat, and if you've never read it, now's the time to treat yourself to an amazing, powerful story.

Chaykin says it eloquently in his introduction: "The Elseworlds books took a direction that I never would have anticipated but fell in love with immediately...familiar and beloved characters were dropped into different eras, with the familiar and belove tropes and themes of these characters played out against the particular and usually romanticized elements of these historical melieus.

"I produced a number of these books, as writer and artist, and I have to say that none was as much pure fun as the book you now hold in your hands. I credit the late and beloved Archie Goodwin, the original editor of the material collected here, with, perhaps unintentionally, wooing me away from fantasy and SF and pushing me toward the realm of crime fiction, a world in which I still wallow and live.

A few words here about that fabulous Dan Brereton. [He] possesses that odd and perfect blend of a comic book artist's narrative gifts, coupled with an approach to painting that creates an indelible atmosphere of dread, mystery, suspense and yes, dare I say it, moody sexiness..."

It's a time of transition between the Fifties and the dawn of the Sexual Revolution, the Vietnam War and turning on, tuning in and dropping out. Like the rest of the USA, Gotham City is filled with giddy optimism. And no one could know that the dark days lay ahead--especially her two masked defenders, Batgirl and Robin.

For them, the joyride was about to end ... and the last stop was death!
