- Full Description
A break-out collection that's just stunning. DC produced some of the very finest war (and sometimes anti-war) comics ever, even including EC's work. And by the best artists in the field. This includes an amazing selection of artwork, including two fold-outs, 11 covers, and tons of top-notch pages. The "Big 3" war titles are highly collected, with prices rocketing in recent years. They often featured superb work by both Kubert and Heath. Never before has the original artwork for these been put together in one collection like this.
As with all Artist's Editions, these complete stories are scanned from the original art work and reproduced to the exacting standards that has garnered IDW five consecutive Eisner Awards for the Artist's Edition series. If you are a fan of Classic DC war comics you cannot afford to miss this incredible book! I know I won't, and I'm pretty choosy about which of these I take home. But this stuff is fabulous and seeing that art close up will be a real treat.
Wonderful selections by each artist, with the most coverage, deservedly so, of Kubert and Heath. But some superb John Severin, Alex Toth, and even Jack Kirby and one piece by Brian Bolland nicely rounds this out. The double-page spreads, that Heath in particular liked to create, are just fantastic to see in this large format.
A small aside: When I attended my first New York Comic Art Convention in 1970, it was the equivalent to today's San Diego as a mecca for fans and creators. Several of us who'd driven from California stayed with show producer and legend Phil Seuling and his family in his apartment before and after the show, and helped out in various ways when we weren't at our tables or looking for goodies.
Phil Seuling had just turned up a bunch of original art for DC war comics by Heath and Kubert and we picked out many of the best pages--for $5 each. This was 1970, remember! And since we had little money left, Phil gave us credit and we returned to California owing him some $500, as I remember. Not being a collector of original art at the time--I was hot for EC's and vintage Frazetta and other artists in comics--we (John Barrett and I) sold them in our San Jose store, Comic World. For around $10 each. One of those buyers was Grant Geissman, who has now written many books about EC and the EC artists. I wonder where those other pages went, now 45 years ago. Oh, boy. Wish I'd kept some for myself.
