1942-52. Our Highest Recommendation. By Greg Sadowski. Even larger than the first volume, this is packed with scores of letters between Wolverton and his editors and publishers and excerpts from his personal diaries, providing documentary insight not only into Wolverton’s day-to-day life and career, but also the inner workings of the early comic book industry. It is also chock full of Wolverton’s comics stories from this period, including 17 science-fiction and horror tales fully restored and never before collected in a single volume. In color! Plus FAR more.

Greg Sadowski (Four Color Fear) has gone to incredible lengths to uncover as much unpublished art as possible, including preliminary drawings, syndicated strips, comic book work, and even rejected covers.

This includes his cartoon caricatures of famous personalities, spoof caricatures (like Lena the Hyena, winner of Mad's Ugliest Girl contest), comic strips he worked up for syndication that never made it, actual advertising pieces, lots of humor pieces from comics, lots of pictures of Basil and famliy.

The book starts out with his early rejection letters, photographed in full color on the letterheads of Detective Comic Inc (from Jack Schiff, 1942), Dell (from Oscar Lebeck, 1944), Timely (from Stan Lee, 1944 and again in 1946),  Famous Funnies (1946), Marvel (1948, when they dropped Powerhouse Pepper). Amazing, when you consider how much highly-beloved work he was cranking all through this period and then later on. I love the full color letterheads and the irony of no work for such a fine artist, whose work is still reprinted and prized to this day!

It’s a good one, don't miss this.

"Wolverton provided...a nearly inexhaustible supply of comics...richly imagined sci-fi exploits, slapstick violence, visions of armageddon...and the most grotesque faces ever drawn." -Robert Shuster, The Village Voice

Greg Sandowski is the author of numerous (13) fine collections on the best comics of the Golden Age, such as: Four Color Fear, Supermen! The First Wave of Comic Book Heroes, Bernie Krigstein I and II, Action! Mystery! Thrills! etc.
