- Full Description
The last new super-hero of the Golden Age--or the first super-hero of the Silver Age? You decide! A scientist receives a terrific dosage of radiation--and suddenly finds himself charged with super-strength! Sound familiar? Follow Captain Flash and his young ally Ricky as they battle the Iron Mask, the Mirror Man, the Black Knight, the Invaders and more, in this 4-issue from Sterling Comics! Plus Tomboy--a masked teen-aged super-heroine, her origin drawn by the fabulous Mort Meskin! Bonus! The two-issue run of Sterling's short-lived The Tormented from 1954.
The Tormented is a real offbeat title, with weird tales drawn by Mike Sekowsky, Mike Roy, Bill Ely, Edvard Moritz, and others! Both issues have great good-girl art covers by Mike Roy, both with skeletons coming back to life to threaten cute young ladies.
Writer Carl Wessler was actually one of the few writers at EC Comics back in the same period, as Al Feldstein discovered he could not do it all. But his talent shows through here, making these stories fun and atypical of comics then.
Plus a long, detailed introductory look at the super-hero comics of the 1950s by Silver Age great Roy Thomas! Roy makes the point that Capt. Flash was indeed the very last super hero title before the fabled re-appearance of The Flash in Showcase...but yet, did Capt. Flash actually begin the new emergence of superheroes, even though the title itself didn't last long?
It had all the modern elements...radiation, interesting super-villains, space invaders, even the name, Flash, which may have worried DC, who had let their own Flash trademark lapse into public domain, after being one of their mainstay comic heroes in the 1940s.
Drawn by DC stalwart Mike Sekowsky, future artist of the 1960s Justice League of America. Here the young Sekowsky is already recognizable, but inspired by the talented Alex Toth, he's pushing the envelope on interesting layouts and perspectives, making this exceptionally fun to look at and to read.
