  1. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Volume 5 1989-1998
    $40.00

As this volume opens Crumb is 46. These middle years bring refinement of his lifelong turmoil and further honing of artistic talent, with many serious portraits mixed with hilarious introspection and one- and two-page strips and never-used comic covers. More words accompany the drawings, demonstrating Crumb’s brilliant powers of observation. The family’s move to France in 1991 is heralded by a switch from portraits of apple-cheeked American girls sketched while waiting for food in California cafes to portraits of girls in French cafes, pastorals of French countryside, and homeless beggars in the Metro. 2. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Volume 4 Late 1966 to Mid '67 Hardcover
    $200.00

The R. Crumb Sketchbook series reprints Crumb's personal sketchbooks, the immediate products of Mr. Obsessive Sketcher's genius. Personally selected by the artist, the drawings in these volumes include much material never seen before, not even in the German "2001" editions of the sketchbooks (also long out of print). Volume 4 covers the period from late 1966 to mid '67 and Crumb seems to be preoccupied with cars, radio consoles, Jesus, women and sex. Stinky Finger McFarland and Big Baby and Her Front Porch Gang make an appearance in color. Learn More
  3. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Volume 2 Mid 1965 to Early '66 Hardcover
    $200.00

A fascinating look into the working mind of the finest cartoonist of the last 30+ years. Volume 2 contains gorgeous selections circa mid-1965 to early 1966. Subjects include portraits of his friends, landscapes, roughed out strips, studies for commercial work, and, of course, girls, girls, girls. Black-and-white illustrations throughout, and 15 pages of color illustrations. Learn More
  4. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Volume 5 Late 1967 to Early '68 Hardcover
    $125.00

Volume 5 covers 1967 and 1968, the time when Crumb was crowned King of the Undergrounds, and includes drawings of "flower children" and strips with his famous characters such as Mr. Natural, Shuman the Human, and Eggs Ackley. (And not-so-famous characters such as Bob Dill, the Folk-Singing Pickle.) Unexpected gems and early versions of famous pieces leap out at you as you glance through the book. A case in point this time: remember the famous EVO "Mr. Natural as a vacuum-cleaner salesman" cover, which showed the sage/huckster alarming Mrs. Suburban Housewife? (Fantagraphics used the image on a t-shirt.) This characteristically Crumb-esque piece, symbol of mainstream America's confusion face-to-face with the explosion of the late '60s, appears in an early version here in Volume 5. Learn More
  5. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Volume 3 1966 Hardcover
    $200.00

Every aspect of Robert Crumb is shown off in the handsome third installment of his '60s sketchbook work. There's Crumb the Cartoonist, weighing in with some complete one- and two-page strips featuring, among other things, his famous characters Eggs Ackley and Mr. Natural (the latter of which, incidentally, sports a black beard)... and a rough of the classic "Keep on Truckin'" page, to boot! There's Crumb the Satirist, giving us parody covers and fake ads, not to mention his takes on cultural icons such as Mickey Mouse (of course!), Donald Duck, Heckle & Jeckle, and -- hey! is that Harpo Marx there on page 133? And look, isn't that a young Fritz the Cat? Learn More
