Outstanding art, drawn in 1961 by EC Comics veterans Reed Crandall and George Evans. Set in 1830s England, Oliver escapes to London where he meets Jack Dawkins, a boy his own age, and a career criminal by the name of Fagin who trains orphan boys to pick pickets for him.
Through many misadventures Oliver fights his way through adversity and manages to stay on the right side of things, so that eventually things come out to reward him in the end. Reprints Classics Illustrated #23 from the first years of the Classics series, redrawn and newly adapted in 1961.
William B. Jones (Classics Illustrated: A Cultural History) provides a highly detailed introduction and history of this classic, including full color reproductions of the 1946 Classics edition cover and two inside pages.
