Entirely from the year 1940, all the Superman stories in chronological order as they first appeared. This volume includes the first appearances of such classic figures as Daily Planet editor Perry White and Superman’s archenemy, Lex Luthor. It is also in these timeless tales that the Man of Tomorrow first takes flight, no longer just leaping tall buildings in a single bound, but soaring over them! with each new story, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were continuing to expand and enrich the world of their new creation.

Artists Wayne Boring and Jack Burnley come aboard in the last few stories as new staffers--ghosts--to help Shuster keep up with all these stories. And fun stories they are...I've recently been re-reading many of these and they are so much fun. Superman is still a pretty unbridled character--police officers are as likely to take a shot at him as are gangsters. He's still righting social wrongs...in this issue, he goes after a gangster-run prescription conspiracy. He's the champion of the underdog, and no wrong is beneath his notice.

Lois turns up in one story as a bleached blonde, and in a strapless dress she's a knockout. She gets Clark to take off his glasses, and actually declares him to be quite handsome. Meanwhile, poor Superman is sure she's going to recognize his secret identity. But they happily go out on the town to try and set up jewel thieves, "The Black Gang." Bullets fly, Clark loses a suit, and saves Lois once again.

These lower price softcovers collect the material that first appeared in the old DC Archives series, in ten-issue segments, and more recently in the huge Omnibus editions. The first Superman Omnibus, which contains this material along with earlier stories, is unavailable.
