- Full Description
This manga adaptation of Lovecraft's only complete novel is beautifully illustrated, with highly detailed and darkly moody artwork. I'm very impressed. This could be the best-ever adaptation, at least from the aspect of art, that I've seen of HPL's work yet. Journey into the core of Lovecraft's mythos--the deep caverns and even deeper time of the inhospitable continent (Antarctica) where the secret history of our planet is preserved--amidst the ruins of its first civilization, built by the alien Elder Things and bio-engineered monstrosities, the shoggoths.
Since it was first published in Astounding Stories during the classic pulp era of the 1930s, At the Mountains of Madness has influenced both horror and science fiction.
January 25, 1931: an expedition team arrives at a campsite in Antarctica...to find its crew of men and sled dogs strewn and dead. Some are hideously mangled, as if in rage--some have been dissected in a curious and cold-blooded manner. Some are missing. But a still more horrific sight is the star-shaped mound of snow nearby...for under its five points is a grave--and what lies beneath is not human!
Gou Tanabe has both adapted HPL's story AND drawn this feast for the eyes. Born in 1975 in Japan, he's been winning awards since 2001. He's is well known for his adaptations, including Maxim Gorky's "Twenty Six Men and a Girl” (honorable mention), Anton Chekov's "The House with the Mezzanine," once a silent horror film. His first HPL adaptation was in 2004, for the 1921 story "The Outsider," His 2018 H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound and Other Stories was nominated for an Eisner Award.
