Recommended. By Chip Kidd. Photographs by Geoff Spear. Captain Marvel made his debut in Whiz Comics in 1940, and within a few years was outselling his biggest competitor--Superman. Along with Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr., he starred in a huge variety of merchandise—secret decoders, figurines, buttons, paper rockets, tin toys, puzzles, costumes. And a fan club. Here these are: an unprecedented assortment, gathered together by award-winning writer/designer Chip Kidd and photographer Geo Spear. Comics pages, covers, rare artwork, one-of-a-kind toys...all here and much more. Fine. Small bump to the top corner. Slight defect in the first signature where the pages weren't fully cut. Some of the first few pages have a small tear at the top.

Spy Smasher also puts in a guest appearance. There are also stills from the 1941 Captain Marvel serial, starring Tim Tyler. He was the first super hero ever in a serial, preceding Superman, and it was one of the best of the 1940s. There are also dozens of very cool full color trading cards that are new to us, special store displays for the Fawcett Comics Line, the list goes on and on.

Jack Kirby's complete 15-page origin story of The Big Red Cheese, as he was affectionately known, is also here. Plus artwork by C.C. Beck, Mac Raboy.
