Our Highest Recommendation. By Sergio Toppi. Foreword by Dave McKean Presenting the third volume in a new library of works by master illustrator Sergio Toppi. This has become one of my favorite series--the stories are fabulously drawn and wonderfully written, and most have never appeared in English before this. Here we have five "historical" tales set in Central and South America: Tzoacotlan, San Isidro Maxtacingo 1850, Chapungo, The Legend of Potosi, and The Treasure of Cibola. Featuring a brand new, 2019 foreword by legendary artist, Dave McKean.

Here's an excerpt: "Toppi appears to originate in two places: the flowing, assured storytelling of great newspaper adventure comic strips and the much more graphic, single-powerful-image-making of great book illustration. His stories weave between these two modes, never letting his illustrative mastery freeze the storytelling, but never letting his images become simply functional as so many comic and newspaper strip illustrators do."

"In fact, he just doesn't seem capable of making a workman-like drawing. They all have the veracity of observation, and the freedom of expressive imaginative drawing--it's a fine balance...Toppi considers each page as an overall flow of rhythm and structure, he tells his stories with complex orchestral arrangements, not single melodic lines."

"...finally...I love that he loves the shapes, textures, and characters of animals and birds so much. As the stories progress, there is also a bestiary being carefully compiled."

[Toppi is also master at creating] "a sense of place, of culturally specific individuals in their particular spaces, buildings, environments." I point this out because that is such a strong factor in a book like this. You'll find authentic, very real aboriginal characters here, deserts, mountains, tribal scenes, weapons, lost civilizations, all feeling well documented, very specific to South America and its peoples and places. It's another one of of the joys of Toppi's stories. -Bud
