The greatest saga in sword-and-sorcery history begins -- the saga of Conan! Born on a battlefield in the frozen lands of Cimmeria, Conan fights his way through the untamed Hyborian kingdoms, sparing no man, woman or wizard his wrath. His adventures will become legend. He will become king. Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith brought Robert E. Howard's iconic creation to four-color life with work that set new standards for comic book storytelling and catapulted Smith from newcomer to fan favorite artist.

New 2018 Introduction by Roy Thomas--12 full pages chronicle the ups and downs of introducing Marvel and Stan Lee to the wonders of Robert E. Howard's universe, and giving Windsor-Smith the artistic freedom to make this one of the finest Marvel series ever. After they couldn't draft John Buscema, their first choice to handle the new series! John wanted it, but publisher Martin Goodman was already paying royalties to the REH estate, so no top-drawer artist for this series...let's get a lower paid newbie. Barry Windsor-Smith! And the rest is history...

Over 150 bonus pages collect rarities like Roy Thomas's page breakdown notes to Smith from Conan #1, Roy's Rostrum from Marvelmania #2-4, announcing and discussing the new series, which was Marvel's first sword and sorcery title; unused pencils for the cover of Marvelmania #3; Bullpin bulletin pages and house ads; original art for #3, concept sketch and finished cover of #4, finished as well as pencil art for #5; a bunch of original pages for #7; and it just goes on and on. It even has notes and breakdowns of the objectionable art pointed out by Leonard Darvin from the Comics Code Authority--as Barry pushed all their buttons with nudity. You can see all the original artwork before it was censored to make the code happy.

Marvel also presents every letters page plus full color images of all the paperback collections that also used Barry's artwork, and reworked Smith covers for the Conan Classics reprint series in 1994-95, and Roy's very personal introductions to each of these issues, with more artwork and two-pages of inside stories for each issue.

All painstakingly restored to match the majesty of the original editions. In these early exploits, Conan ventures from his homeland for the first time, honing his skills as a thief, mercenary, pirate and above all, warrior! As well as the Conan issues #1-26, this also includes the Starr the Slayer story from Chamber of Darkness.
