Highly Recommended. By Fabien Grolleau and Jeremie Royer. A sweeping, intelligent. immersive biographical graphic novel from award-winning creators, newly translated from its 2016 French appearance. Join the legendary scientist as a young man off on a five-year voyage aboard the H.M.S. Beagle--in 1831. He begins the journey young and gifted but distracted, but returns a serious man of science, changing both his life and the course of modern science. This is quite thick and a good, solid read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this very brave young man's experiences...imagine leaving England on a two-year voyage of exploration, which ends up taking five years, and completely circling the globe in the process. In these times slavery was widespread and accepted, along with the "right" of colonial masters to subjugate the tribes they came into contact with. You can trace first Darwin's distaste for this, which quickly leads to his taking the sides of the downtrodden and at one point, being ostracized by the ship's captain for his "radical" views of social equality.

Includes end-notes on the journey of the Beagle, Darwin and Slavery, Darwin and Native Peoples, Wallace's Letter and the Theory of Evolution, The Draughtsman on the Beagle and Young Fuegia's Fate.

Pictorial endpapers, wrap-around cover art. Quite a handsome production. First U.S. publication.
