- Full Description
Interviews with Phyllis Galde (Fate magazine), Gordon Van Gelder (Fantasy and Science Fiction) and Matthew Turcotte (Archie digest collector); articles on Galaxy Science Fiction, the girlie digests of Myron Fass, 1950s newspaper/crime digest The Big Story, fiction by Lesann Berry, Richard Krauss and Joe Wehrle, Jr.; reviews of Fate #725, Fate trading cards, Paperback Parade #85 and Coronet June 1950; and Rob Imes’ In Defense of Digests, an outstanding and informative overview of the entire history of digests.
As Imes explains in his feature, digests were the "more literary" sister to the pulps. They began appearing at the same time as the pulps, but slowly publishers moved out of the old pulp format and fiction and articles moved into digests, as well as the expanding paperback market. But digests began as far back as the 1930s, and authors like A. Merritt, Dashiell Hammett, Rex Stout and Mickey Spillane all had material predominately in digests.
There's also a great history of art, from the colorful pulp-inspired covers to more modern work by the likes of Wally Wood, Emsh, Kelly Freas, even Vaughn Bode and Jeffrey Jones. Digests have a lot of history, and this new magazine sets out to offer it in an attractive, appealing series of articles, art and even genre-inspired fiction. I like the package very much, have enjoyed reading each issue, and wanted to share this specialty series with my customers.
