Fantastic Four #33-51 & Annual #3, 1964-66. Our Highest Recommendation. By Stan Lee. Art by Jack Kirby. If Stan Lee and Jack Kirby set the comics world on fire in 1961 with the debut of Fantastic Four, in 1965 they tuned it up and really got humming along. Letting loose an unmatched burst of rapid-fire creativity, they gave birth to the Frightful Four, the Inhumans, Galactus, the Silver Surfer and even pulled off the first super hero wedding--all here. There are also monster menaces galore, including Dragon Man, and out-of-this-world villains, from the shape-shifting Skrulls to the undersea warlord Attuma.

But it's not just the panel-bursting action that makes FF great. It's the drama of a family joined together to face all the wonders of the Marvel Universe.

That is what made this title great. I will admit to bias, because I began reading the FF right during this era. I even had my name in FF #40 as a member of the MMMS. But I've been reading comics all my life now, and these are still some of the most fun. Daredevil makes a great appearance, his first ever in the title--right off his run under Wally Wood in his own title. The Thing gets fed up with things and walks out, and is quickly turned again the remaining members by, well, you'll find out. It's the soap opera of comics books, but all in a wonderful way as the characters were like part of your own family.

Stan was at his finest writing the FF, and Jack was dreaming up the coolest new characters, heroes and villains both, long before he would move over to DC and create his Fourth World. This was a case of 1 + 1 = more than two, because these two creators really were at their best working together, and these are the hallowed issues.

Noted inkers on Jack's work include the superlative Joe Sinnot, considered by many as the best team-up with Kirby every on the FF, plus Chic Stone, Vince Colletta and Mike Giacoia.
