From sexy jungle girls to even sexier ray gun toting space women and beyond, Fiction House Comics had it all! Now for the first time the entire history of Fiction House, the leading purveyor of Good Girl art during the Golden Age of Comics, is told in a single volume! Stuffed with breathtaking cover reproductions, original artwork, dozens of cover preliminaries by Joe Doolin (!) and even full length stories. The story of one of the most successful publishers ever, from their pulp origins on, with artwork by Matt Baker, George Tuska, Lou Fine, Bob Lubbers, Murphy Anderson, Lily Renee and many others.
This is even better than I imagined it to be. There are dozens of pencilled preliminary covers by Doolin for titles from Planet to Fight, alongside the finished covers, an absolutely amazing archive of work. And unpublished cover ideas! We've shown one here from Planet! And stunning fine line work from the original artwork by artists like Rueben Moeira (we've shown you "I Confess" here), and Lily Renee ("Werewolf Hunter")--so far superior to anything reproduced in the comics.
I've personally collected Fiction House comics, and also their pulps like Planet Stories, Jungle Stories, and Wings, for decades. They are one of the most interesting comics companies of the Golden Age. Will Eisner and Jerry Iger were instrumental in their beginnings, creating characters and entire titles for them (Jumbo Comics, Hawk of the Seas, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle). Planet Comics still is THE sci-fi comic book title of the 1940s. -Bud
Matt Baker got his start at Fiction House just after the war. George Tuska, who worked at Marvel in the 1960s, was there at the beginning. Lou Fine did wonderful cover art. Bob Powell was one of the co-creators and earliest artists drawing Sheena. Titles like Fight, Rangers, and Wings were snapped up by servicemen during and after World War II, as they were filled with stories starring--or co-starring--leggy girls with lots of cleavage and pin-up style panels.
Introduction by noted artist identification expert, Hames Ware. Hames is one of the most knowledgable experts in comics--he's worked for many years with Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. to identify artists for all the Golden Age Comics. Much of their information can now be found on the Grand Comics Database and other web sites.
This may just be the best book Yoe Studios has ever put together--at least from a personal standpoint, it is to me. It is both a celebration of the best of Fiction House, and an amazing look behind the scenes at history, anecdotes and original artwork that until recently, no one knew still existed. 45 pages of introduction and history are followed by 250 solid pages of artwork: covers, stories, splashes, pencils, original page artwork. I can't say enough about this, don't miss it!
