This is a critical overview of the first 30 years of monster magazines, a blanket term to describe both magazines that focus primarily on popular horror movies and magazines that contain comics stories featuring monsters. The book describes the rise and fall of these magazines, examining the contributions of Warren and their iconic Famous Monsters, Marvel, Skywald, Heavy Metal, 1994, House of Hammer and many others. Full appendix. All genres, from Zombies to Conan to Kung Fu to "The Bloody Pulps."

Cotter also looks at the effect of the Comics Code Authority on both present and future efforts in the field. He identifies several sub-genres, including monster movies, zombies, vampires, sword-and-sorcery, science fiction and pulp-style fiction. The work includes several indexes and technical credits.Several dozen full page reproductions of cover art.

Robert Michael “Bobb” Cotter, a graphic designer, lives in Pittsburgh. In addition to having written several books about comics and film, he writes a monthly column for Creepy Classics.
