Almost Gone! Recommended. By Greg Simkins. This new monograph traces the development of the artist, from a kid playing with crayons to the present day. From his early addiction to comic books and cartoons, to his obsession with animals and discovery of fine art through the works of Dali, John James Audubon, Caravaggio and more. In some cases, preliminary sketches can be found alongside finished works providing a glimpse into the artistic process and evolution of a piece. Other creations stand alone, masterpieces of artwork as narrative.

Details

One of the most prolific artists working today, Greg “Craola” Simkins’ diverse body of work is as likely to be found in a gallery as on the streets. Bridging pop surrealism and graffiti art with the skill of a fine art painter, it's lowbrow with the imagination of Robert Williams, Mark Ryden and Todd Schorr, mixed with superlative fine modern realist art. Like those mentioned, his art is unique and recognizable, blending a wealth of early influences with contemporary pop culture references.

Although most of the works here are complex, brilliantly coloring paintings, this does offer some looks at a different side of the artist. We are treated to several of his outdoor installations. We've shown one scan here with Pinocchio as the starting point...several pictures show the influence of stories and fairy tales like this.

He's also invented his own characters, such as Breeze, The White Knight and The Pearl Thief. Learn about this and much more in his own words in an eloquent 10-page introduction to his life and career.
