- Full Description
Harvey Comics is best known for kid-friendly hits like Richie Rich and Little Dot. But like Atlas (Marvel) and EC, Harvey were perfectly happy to pull out all the stops on horror. Before the Comics Code, they produced many of the meatiest and wildest stories of gore and terror, ghosts and sudden death, strange creatures and madmen and madwomen. Comics fans consider their short but sweet run of horror next in line after EC, and equal to or better than the somewhat pedestrian fare from Atlas.
Here's a perfect example. On the art side, you have A-1 talent like Bob Powell, Howard Nostrand (who was directed to imitate the EC styles of Jack Davis and Wally Wood!), Warren Kremer, the great Rudy Palais and Lee Elias, who did most of the gruesome covers and many stories. While this begins with #30, this is actually the first six issues of the title. It was previously Black Cat, devoted to the motorcycle-riding heroine who appears here only on the cover of the first issue.
In fact, Peter Normanton talks about Nostrand's superb work in a special article here. And the stories: The Thing from the Grave," "Gateway to Death,"The Sleepwalking Killer," "The Sea Witch of Sandy Hook," and "Tapping Doom" are just the first few stories in this six-issue collection. And here in #33 is an electrocution cover included in Parade of Pleasure, the Wertham-like expose on comics. And #35 includes a delicious Atomic Disaster cover and story!
