- Full Description
Illustrator and cartoonist W. Heath Robinson is renowned for his ingenious and haphazard contraptions--he was known as the "Rube Goldberg of England." His witty drawings of complicated machines are ironically designed to simplify everyday life, but always manage to make everything appear more complicated! His work is steeped in the humor of calamity, including World Wars I and II, and his name soon became synonymous for absurd and makeshift devices--as well as the superb advertising art and illustrated books he also created.
This delightful new book is broken into three sections. The first third of the book presents his fine "literary illustrations," as he did work for authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Rudyard Kipling (Song of the English), Shakespeare (Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream), The Brothers Grimm, Hans Anderson and Charles Perrault (Old Time Stories), and books of his own, like the legendary Adventures of Uncle Lubin and the wonderful series Monarchs of Merrie England.
The second third collects humorous cartoons, featuring gorgeous water color work from just before, during, and after World War I. Robinson was widely popular by then, and top magazines hired him to create covers and opulent full page and full color features for them.
The last third has a lot in common with his above humorous cartoons, but here are even crazier and more outlandish creations...wonderful machines, gadgets and contraptions that made him a household name in Britain. Again we are treated to more delightful full color works.
Bud here--I've collected the works of Heath Robinson since I first discovered illustrated books back in the 1970s. He remains one of my favorite illustrators, capable of both serious work, as on his 1900 edition of Edgar Allan Poe, Song of the English and Twelfth Night...as well as brilliantly funny pieces. There was no creation he could not draw. Many of the works here are reproduced from the original artwork, giving the pieces selected here a very special detail and brilliance that makes this book a truly special experience. Whether this is your introduction to his work or you are a veteran fan like me, you're going to like this.
