Recommended. By William Roy. Art by Sylvian Dorange. From a childhood filled with curiosity and ambition despite the stereotypes imposed on her, to an abusive marriage that she ingeniously escaped from, to finding her way to Hollywood stardom in the 1930s and 1940s... Hedy was billed as the world's most beautiful woman but faced rampant sexism and harassment. But as well as a glamorous star of the Golden Age of Hollywood, alongside Judy Garland and Clark Gable, she was an unparalleled inventor. Her designs revolutionized planes built by Howard Hughes, and her secret communication system helped the Allies against the Nazis, a technology that would become the blueprint for today's Wi-Fi!

At first the Joint Chiefs nearly dismissed her important technology proposals, and suggested she use her fame and looks to sell war bonds. She did, raising an amazing $15 million dollars during WWII. And her inventions did finally get used, too.

A visionary that never feared going after her goals and defied convention at every turn, Hedy Lamarr was a true woman of wonder. She was married five times, dated some of the most eligible men in Hollywood, including Howard Hughes, fought with Sam Goldwyn of MGM over his blatant sexism. And swam and cavorted nude in her very first film, the notorious Ecstacy, which also featured the first on-screen female orgasm!

She had an extraordinarily long career in Hollywood, capped by walking out on MGM to co-produce, with director Cecil B. DeMille, the award-winning Samson and Delilah. This was to become her most famous role.

Like Bettie Page, Hedy also would become a recluse later in life, not wanting her public to see how she had aged. But she kept up with events through her children and one of her ex-husbands would accept the prestigious Pioneer Award for her very important role with her inventions in helping us win World War II.

Originally published in France, a fascinating graphic novel biography of a famous sex-symbol who is worth learning more about. I enjoyed it.
