After many years of talking about Moby Dick (the book and the film), Victorian ghost stories, comics, folklore and history in general, Mike Mignola, Hellboy and Gary Gianni embarked on a stand-alone story, the graphic-novel adventure titled Into the Silent Sea. Hellboy is marooned in the Sargasso Sea, in that misty, inexplicable realm where classic tales of horror begin. The 144-page collection presents every page from the original art, oversized, every page also in original pencils, each one with revealing commentary by both creators. Plus: the complete, readable MonsterMen story, "A Gift for the Wicked," in the same pencils opposite inks format.
Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy Into the Silent Sea” Studio Edition is a glorious, oversized deluxe treatment showcasing Gianni’s original artwork in an exquisite hardcover book. The combined talents of Mignola and Gianni are on display as the reader follows along the path of the creative process: the script, preliminary roughs, reference photos, completed pencil drawings and finished inks are all shared and discussed. The pencil drawings, many of which have never been seen before by the public, provide insight not only for the student but also for any fan who enjoys lavishly reproduced comic art.
This includes the complete story script, but as prose, alongside the pencil pages. So you can read along, and yet see all the original art as first created, not obscured or modified by dialogue and captions. It's a pretty amazing concept, and we're very impressed. So were the Kickstarter supporters of this project. With a goal to raise $15,000, they raised more than $110,000! I'd say this represents a new leap forward in the presentation of original art and the story behind the creation of a graphic novel.
But it wouldn't be so special if it didn't start out as a very special project. Gary Gianni is well known for his work over the years; illustrated books of Conan and Solomon Kane, drawing the Prince Valiant Sunday Page for many years, and some amazing independent projects like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.He is inspired by the great illustrators of the past, including N.C. Wyeth, Joseph Clement Coll, Franklin Booth and others...much as Berni Wrightson has been.
This could just be his magnum opus--at least it is as far as a Studio Edition presentation. I can't recommend it enough. And damned if the actual story isn't just a great one, too. You can still score the full color version of this as an inexpensive graphic novel in hardcover. We handle it also.
Over two decades of the Mignola and Gianni partnership are underscored by the inclusion of one of Gianni’s MonsterMen Mysteries. The series often appeared as a backup feature in Mignola’s early Hellboy comics. The bonus feature here includes Gianni’s commentary and preliminary pages, intertwined with the finished pages to provide a light-hearted look into the creation of a comic story and another fun tale to read and enjoy.
