Recommended. With Tara McPherson, Joe Jusko, Maurice Leloir, Adam Stower, Mike Zagorski and Fortunino Matania. From classic (Matania, Leloir) to contemporary (Jusko) to avante garde (McPherson, Zagorski), IQ covers the entire spectrum. Excellent feature article on McPherson and her surreal female drawings. And another lengthy article on Tarzan and Dejah Thoris cover artist Joe Jusko. Leloir is of particular interest, a superb French illustrator of that period's equivalent of graphic novels, with stunningly accurate costume. He's best known for the definitive edition of The Three Musketeers in 1893. [I collect his work-Bud].

During and after 1900 a French publisher produced a series of fine historial illustrated novels--mixing text with full page, full color watercolor paintings. Leloir did many of these (along with artist Job)--he was the go-to expert on costume, arms, even coaches and horses...his work for Manon Lescaut, The Sun King Louis XIV, A Sentimental Journey, and Richelieu are some of the most magnificent French illustrated books of their day.

But more than 250 black and white line drawings for The Three Musketeers remain his most famous work, referred to up to the present day. It was the reason actor/producer Douglas Fairbanks brought Leloir to Hollywood to create stage designs and costumes for The Man in the Iron Mask.

Joe Jusko has also done Daredevil (a lovely piece is shown here), Tomb Raider, Conan, The Sub-Mariner, The Fantastic Four, The X-Men--and this feature shows paintings from all these subjects and many more. He remains the go-to creator for fine fantasy and comics covers.

More like a book than a magazine, illustrators is the art quarterly devoted to the finest illustration art ever published. It guides you through the stories behind the artists and their art, with features written by some of the leading authorities on this important art form. As well as building into an indispensable reference library, illustrators gives readers an insight into the creative process, from idea to sketch to painting, and from painting to the image seen by millions.

Truly fabulous artwork, as much as possible scannned from the original work.
