- Full Description
More like a book than a magazine, illustrators is the art quarterly devoted to the finest illustration art ever published. It guides you through the stories behind the artists and their art. Dave McKean: we meet this truly talented and visionary artist, most noted for his work on Sandman. Andy Thomas: best selling artist on a trip through the old West, gunslingers, posses, gritty wild west shoot-outs. Jonathan Ball: the kaleidoscopic world of the illustrator/animator. Vintage paperback artist Sam Peffer (Pan Books) by expert Gary Lovisi.
Peffer is fun, doing classic painted covers from the fine early publisher Pan Books, including early mid-1950s takes on the James Bond novels, long before they made it to the movies. We also very much like the western art of Andy Thomas--not the homogenized cowboys of present-day art, these are wild horse-races and gunfights. I'd say more pulp-style, but these aren't so simple. Thomas is essentially a fine-art painter, in the class of Remington and Russell, so he brings fine detail and a dynamic to these scenes that you'd never get in a pulp or paperback cover.
Plus regular features including The Bookshelf and Letters. As well as building into an indispensable reference library, illustrators gives readers an insight into the creative process, from idea to sketch to painting, and from painting to the image seen by millions. Truly fabulous artwork abounds in every issue, much of the art taken from scans of the original work.
