Details
Features in this exceptionally great issue include N. C. Wyeth: One of America's greatest ever illustrators; Virgil Finlay: the iconic American pulp fantasy, science fiction and horror illustrator; Bobby Chiu: Canadian digital artist extraordinaire (whose sketchbooks we've handled), and Anne & Janet Grahame Johnstone: A glimpse into their world of myths and legends in their illustrated books from the 1950s and 60s. Outstanding reproductions and lots of fine images, many new to us.
The Wyeth feature contains work from his early advertising period through the prime of his book illustration career, much of it from original paintings. The same applies to the Finlay article, with fine work in both pen and ink and full color, including some rare preliminary work, such as for the Weird Tales cover we've shown here.
Bobby Chiu is a regular at San Diego Comic-Con, but we have a hard time keeping his cool sketchbooks in stock because they sell out so quickly. His images of strange creatures and unique and great fun. Lastly, the Johnstone twins were sisters who began their career in the early 1950s. New to us, they are shown here through their classic work on Jason and the Golden Fleece and other tales of Greek and Roman mythology.
More like a book than a magazine, illustrators is the art quarterly devoted to the finest illustration art ever published. It guides you through the stories behind the artists and their art, with features written by some of the leading authorities on this important art form. Occasional nudity.
