Cool cover feature on Frank Kelly Freas, The "Dean" of Science Fiction artists, whose career spanned more than 50 years; Yvonne Gilbert: The outstanding young British artist who created "one of the most famous record sleeves of all time." Laurent Durieux: Brussels illustrator and alternative movie poster artist (and film director), whose new art book we will be handling this spring. And a nice feature on German fantasy artist Heinrich Kley with both b&w and rare color work, from anthropomorphic alligators to war satire. Some nudity.
We've seen a lot of Kley's work--Jim Vadeboncoeur was one of the earliest to unearth color pieces and reproduce them (from the German magazine, Jugend) in his magazine, Images. But here I find work I've never seen before, and it's sharp.
Durieux does fabulous retro redos of movie posters, most of the time far superior to whatever actually accompanied the film. He loves period sci-fi and horror films of the fifties and sixties, as well as favorites like Star Wars and Star Trek, and there's many of these here: King Kong, Metropolis, Iron Giant, Forbidden Planet, Peter and Wendy, The Wolf Man, The Birds, Gigantor, Back to the Future, Pulp Fiction...all these are here, and more.
Gilbert is another young artist who's doing wonderful classic illustration for books like Bluebeard's Wife, Dracula and The Wild Swans, but also can do sexy pin-up drawings for Playboy and Men Only!
