From British art magazine Illustrators Quarterly comes a long overdue look at the illustrations and comic strip art of Don Lawrence. He is regarded as one of the truly greats of British comic strip art and there has never been a book devoted to his whole career. The volume has examples of his wonderful illustrations from Look and Learn, Ranger, and Once Upon a Time as well as comic strips Karl the Viking, Olac the Gladiator, better known in the U.S. due to long-ago editions, The Trigan Empire and Storm. Packed with breath-taking western art, adventure art and fantasy art.
Lawrence is a brilliant artist, a legend of the British scene. U.S. audiences were first introduced to his work with the Titan Books early editions of Storm in 1987 and 1989, widely distributed in comics specialty shops. Storm is an amazing fantasy strip that has been translated all over the world, and produced in very prestigious expensive collections. The Trigan Empire was another break-through collection, actually published in the U.S. by Chartwell Books in 1978, and today is very collectible. It also has been collected in fancy limited editions,
Lawrence's authenticity of costumes and settings in his historical works, and also his finely-detailed style, may remind you of Fortunino Matania. And that is not a comparison made lightly, since I am a huge fan of Matania's unique and magnificent work. The breakout book that finally introduced Matainia to U.S. audiences was also produced by this publisher. They know a good thing!
