- Full Description
We love the large-sized reproductions from the earliest days of comics, classic covers and story pages rarely seen. Great anecdotes, rare memorabilia, inside stories and much more make this the quintessential history of DC's 75 years. Excellent coverage of 1936-1975, which is where our personal interests lie, but carrying on right up to the present. Part coffee-table book, part critical analysis, and one hell of a huge art book. At 10 pounds, this is one of the largest and most impressive books ever devoted to comics.
This is slightly smaller size than the original $200 edition, which weighed in at 16 pounds. But this remains just as impressive, with over 700 pages revealing the entire history of DC Comics.
First writer, then editor, business manager and finally, President of DC Comics, no one is better qualified than Levitz to tackle this comprehensive history of DC. From its roots in pulp and girlie magazine publishing, DC was there at the beginning of comics, first with Detective, New Adventure and Fun Comics, soon home to the birth of Superman.
Then on to Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, All Star and the JSA. In the 1950s DC carefully moved into all the popular genres: western, teen, romance, science fiction, even horror and mystery. Then it was the beginning of the Silver Age, with the new Flash, Green Lantern, the JLA. Next DC became home to up-and-coming young artists like Berni Wrightson, Jeffrey Jones, and Neal Adams, joining vets like Russ Heath, Joe Kubert, Jack Kirby, Gil Kane and countless others.
Paul Levitz expanded on this volume to create a series of smaller books: The Golden Age of DC Comics, The Silver Age of DC Comics, and The Bronze Age of DC Comics. Originally intended to be a six issue series, only these three titles actually appeared.
Here, however, is the entire story in one smashingly impressive volume, big enough that's it's nearly coffee table size already! Over 1,500 images, massive fold-out timelines, index, appendices, film stills and collectables. No true DC fan will want to be without this massive retrospective. Loaded with iconic images and rare artwork! Embossed cover and jacket.
