This edition incorporates a fine new painted cover done in 1957, and an all-new rendering of the story. EC veteran artist John Severin collaborates with (unknown to us) artist Stephen Addeo. Here is Cooper's very famous tale of Hawkeye and Chingachgook, which has interesting parallels and departures from the wonderful 1992 film with Daniel Day Lewis--one of my all-time favorite films. This was part of Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" of the great American frontier.
Classics Illustrated tells this wonderful tale in colorful comic strip form, providing an excellent introduction for younger readers. Also includes theme discussions and study questions, and a short bio of Cooper.
The art here is a real strange bird. It looks like Severin worked on many of the Indian closeups, which was a real strength for him. The work by Addeo is sadly not up to par, so this is a strange mix of fine authentic art and rather pedestrian work. It's still a step above much of the often-dated 1940s art from Classics, so I don't mean to be too harsh. But I can't believe Severin was happy with what his collaborator turned out. Still, over all, it’s fun to see him working here.
