- Full Description
Special edition with color jacket and 20 bonus pages that describe the origins of this new novel, and how the cover art was developed, with extra prelim artwork by Devito. Who were the strange raiders wearing the golden uniforms who pulled off the daring theft? And who was their leader, a being of seemingly supernatural abilities? Doc Savage doesn't know--but The Shadow does! Combining forces, the Man of Bronze and the Dark Avenger follow the trail of a superfoe from The Shadow’s past--Shiwan Kahn, The Golden Master, who appeared in no less than four Shadow novels in the pulp era.
The second team-up of two iconic pulp characters. Entirely new story by one of the finest pulp writers we have today.
As usual, this deluxe hardcover comes with bonus features. The new cover by Joe Devito is repeated on the backcover of the dust jacket, but without any text. Inside, Will Murray carefully describes how this story came into being, using The Shadow's arch nemesis, Shiwan Khan. This adventure jumps back in time by ten years, before the first Shadow/Doc adventure, which begins in 1933. And Shiwan Khan serves as a stand-in for Fu Manchu, which has always been an requested encounter for Doc.
Walter Gibson himself left the idea of a resurrection of Shiwan Kahn--the Golden Master--in one of his last novels. But he never acted on it. Murray loves to pick up these threads and run with them, as we see here. And even Lester Dent gets into the inspiration, as HE left a springboard for this match up.
Also, Murray looks at how the cover art was created, including photos of the models and pen sketches of various ideas that led to the final painting. Again, all this is in the bonus section available only in this deluxe hardcover edition.
The bookplate is signed by Murray, Devito, and in facsimile by Lester Dent.
