- Full Description
A fine art book funded by a highly successful Kickstarter program, Michael's first collection showcases six years of art. He has appeared in Spectrum six times, including the new Volume 24 which has two pieces, one of which (the wonderful leopard painting) is featured here in describing how he moves from idea and prelim to final painting. 80 pages of art with notes in a high quality softcover. We love the cover. Sections include Beasts Real and Imagined, Lovecraft-inspired horror, The Final Frontier (including two Star Trek pieces), even some heroic fantasy in Love, Honor and Sacrifice.
Michael is a freelance illustrator whose work thrives on mystery and atmosphere. He’s been known to work on books about spooky beings and grand adventure. His work often reminds me of Mark Schultz. Mike Mignola is another artist who works in the same mysterious/macabre genre. But Michael also can do humor, romance and light fantasy, so he's a distillation of many techniques and themes, difficult to pin down but always eloquent and powerful in his work.
Born in Boston, raised in Bangkok, Michael has a BFA in Illustration from the California College of The Arts. He currently resides in Oakland, California.
Select clients include book publishers Houghton Mifflin, Tor, and Scholastic, comics publisher IDW, the prestigious Folio Society, and Scientific American.
I hadn't known Michael's work before, but I found him exhibiting this new book at a recent comic book show and it was love at first sight. The cover featuring a vintage diving helmet and suit, with what appears to be an very non-human vaporous creature inside, is a real attention grabber. There are even gold embossed titles on the cover of this first class art collection.
