- Full Description
Destined to bring his work back into the spotlight, this features more than 350 illustrations with extensive captions, three original texts by Fritz Kahn, a foreword by Steven Heller, and an essay about Kahn's life and oeuvre. Natural science buffs, graphics professionals, and anyone interested in visual expression of ideas will be fascinated by this tribute to Kahn's greatest achievements. We've never seen any book like it! Leave it to Taschen to do such a superb tribute to a forgotten genius.
Fritz Kahn was a German doctor, educator, popular science writer, and information graphics pioneer whose brilliant work has all but fallen into oblivion. Chased out of Germany by the Nazis, who banned and burned his books, Kahn emigrated to Palestine, then France, and finally the United States to continue his life's work. Though his achievements were numerous, the most notable was the development of creative visualizations to explain complex scientific ideas.
There's a long section on the Human Body, broken up into skeleton, muscles, circulatory system, respiration, nervous system, sexuality and much more. Then a section on Nature deals with Living Things, The Earth, The Heavens, The Atom, and Nature and Culture. Special features examine Einstein Sonata, Fairy-Tale Journey on the Bloodstream, It's a Miracle We Live Longer than Two Minutes! Plus a list of Kahn's publications, which runs 20 pages. The reproductions are evenly divided between scientific-looking articles and fun, quirky advertising that used Kahn's trademark pictorials.
In parts this reminds of funky but fascinating Hugo Gernsback Amazing Stories pulp covers and artwork, particularly the artwork of Frank R. Paul. Other times it looks like those brilliantly-drawn German Expressionist posters of the 1920s and 1930s. Even though drawn in a sometimes dated style, Kahn was truly a pioneer and a brilliant innovator.
This was first published in a larger size edition with fewer pages. This has been reformatted with nearly 500 pages, in hardcover, but at the usual bargain price that Taschen offers on second editions.
