Like The Flash and Adam Strange, this was the thinking-fan's hero. Renowned editor Julius Schwartz guided DC comics into the Silver Age, even before the Marvel Age began, with these heroes. Writers like John Broome did a superlative job here, and Gil Kane made a name for himself working on literally every issue of Green Lantern in this run, beginning with #1 in 1960.

There are also cross-overs with The Flash, two appearances of the original Golden Age Green Lantern, and many more firsts here. His first apperance ever was in the 1959 Showcase #22,by John Broome and Gil Kane. It only took two more Showcase appearances to convince DC they had a hit on their hands, and GL's been with us ever since.

Especially cool in these early issues was how GL would use his ring to create solutions to problems. Unlike other two-fisted heroes, he'd will his ring to stop villiains, build walls, dams, satellites...if he could imagine it, he could create it. Why punch anyone when he could just will a concrete wall around them, or a lake beneath them, or confuse them with an illusion. His only weak spot...the ring had to be recharged every 24 hours. And yellow--anything yellow was beyond the ring's power to affect.

This all made for stories that hold up well and show why this character is a fan favorite of the Silver Age. I can't recomend these stories enough, they're among the very finest of the era, including Marvel contributions!
