A super-classy production, with a jet black cloth binding with a small gilt title "The Art of Magic" and a huge blind-stamping of the word "Illusions," both embossed into the front cover. The black motif continues with many black borders, but throughout you'll find the rarest of the rare images of great posters, handbills, and other scarce ephemera.

Chapters, each by a different expert, include "The River," "The Mainspring of Modern Magic," "Magic in Montreal," "Fantastic Lives," "The Power of Symbols," "More Than a Lovely Assistant," "The Art of Magic Posters," and "The Magicians."

During the Golden Age of Magic—the 1880s to the 1940s—magicians and prestidigitators fought a veritable advertising war. In the United States, Canada, and Europe, city walls were plastered with posters offering tantalizing previews of magicians' most spectacular tricks. Perhaps needless to say, but all the greats are represented here with their finest and most startling poster art: Houdini, Thurston, Carter, Kellar, as well as foreign masters like Bhung Ling Soo, Andress, Adelaide Herrmann, Servais Le Roy, The Great Jansen, Linardini, Vonetta, Anna Eva Fay, Kar-miKittie Baldwin "The Modern Witch of Endor," and Handy-Bandy and Nadia-Nadyr "Direct from Egypt!" Plus many, many others. Reproduction is just superlative, with bright colors and wonderful detail featuring devils and witches, demons, beautiful girls, card tricks, decapitation, levitation, etc.

Published to accompany an exhibition at the McCord Museum in Montreal, which was gifted in 2015 with one of the largest collections of magic posters and documents in the world, the Allan Slaight Collection, this book will delight graphic designers, illustrators, and magic enthusiasts alike.
