- Full Description
This second b&w annual features 300 illustrations from 60 different artists and covers a wide range of techniques and media. Included is multi-page material on Norman Lindsay, A.B. Frost, Charles Dana Gibson, W.T. Benda, John D. Batten, Garth Jones, Blanche Greer, and W.R. Leigh. Also included are all 20 of T.S. Sullivant's rare 1896 series, Fables for the Times, and unpublished sections from a Sidney Sime sketchbook.
Other artists featured include: Rackham, Cady, Coll, Flanagan, Brinkley, Flagg, Jessie M. King, Pyle, Wyeth, Fisher, Sarka, all three Robinson brothers and many more. And all little-seen material from scarce sources, usually not reprinted since the first pre-1923 appearance.
As popular as Jim's regular Images issues have been, this annual has always been even more so. These are far larger, 100+ pages, with a square spine making them much more book-like. And the reproduction here, helped by the state-of-the-art Stochastic process, is just stunning.
"Each issue of the annual is a treasure. When I take these to antiquarian book fairs, these are always the first to sell out, even to non-collectors, they are so impressive. It's a fabulous wealth of the best in pen-and-ink illustration, with the finest quality reproduction possible!" -Bud.
The artwork here is chosen for its obscurity, coming from sources never previously collected. And for its content, based on Jim's choice of interesting, well-drawn images from his vast collection, one of the finest in existence. Fantasy is just one theme, knights and fairies and beautiful women all appear here, but you also will find gorgeous drawings and paintings of everything in between. Mythology, history, anthropomorphic animals, humor, erotica. Additionally, Jim worked very hard after scanning each image to make it the best one possible, correcting reproduction flaws and other shortcomings that might have happened in the original printing. So with no alteration, no enhancement, each image is nonetheless improved and most often better reproduced than it was first.
In addition, more so with later issues, some images are direct from the original artwork, such as most of the special issue #11. Jim also writes about many of the contributors, putting the images into persepective. Full biographies of many of the artists (101 of them) are available on Jim's website, www.bpib.com.
Each issue of Images is limited to 2,000 copies. This issue was previously out of print and unavailable to us. While I was helping Jim move his back issues around so we could see what we had to deal with, we discovered several boxes! So this one's being discounted just the same as issues #3-5.
