- Full Description
This collection presents all five Kaluta sketchbooks in a handsome oversized hardcover. All selected by the artist from his personal archives--a cornucopia of delightful delineations and lovely line drawings. We still had a wonderful illustrated bookplate he created for us for his Metropolis in 1995, so we asked him to sign these to accompany this new volume. This is packed with unpublished work; for John Carter and Dejah Thoris, for Carson of Venus, Conan, Fables, Sandman, Wonder Woman and much more.
Kaluta has been creating beautiful imagery for more than 40 years. Highlights of his career include what many consider to be the definitive version of The Shadow, Starstruck, and a myriad of stunning covers illustrated for nearly every comics publisher--as well as being part of the legendary art collective known simply as The Studio (along with Jeffery Catherine Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Bernie Wrightson).
Here is Ender's Game--five pages of sketches; drawings for two un-produced late night adult cartoon series, one with Universal's Frankenstein and Dracula. Jack Frost, Elves, Krampus and Queen Zeida are featured in several pages for an un-produced German television production of L. Frank Baum's Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.
And more: Magic: The Gathering work and a take-off on the Fantastic Four, The Fearsome Four, Fear Itself and Chaos War from Marvel Comics. And there's a Rocketeer feature he worked on for Dave Stevens. The Green Hornet. Madame Xanadu. Uncle Creepy. And Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, commission Shadow pieces, Titania from A Midsummer Night's Dream. And all eight pages of preliminary layouts for IDW's The Rocketeer "Dear Betty" story, along with two more pages of Bettie Page as he worked out getting her just right!
