Gary Gianni's occult detective series The MonsterMen, first published as backups in Hellboy, is collected here in its entirety in an entirely new softcover edition--it was first done in hardcover in 2012. Well-known for his run on the syndicated newspaper comic strip Prince Valiant and many special projects, here Gary gives us five complete Monstermen comic book stories, plus illustrated prose stories based on works by Robert E. Howard, William Hope Hodgson, and Clark Ashton Smith!

Gianni breaks out with this bizarre adventure comic filled with zombie cowboys, squid pirates, abominable snowmen, and a mustachioed skull, all facing off against the swashbuckling protagonist, dressed at all times in a tuxedo and knight's helmet.

Also featured in this collection are classic prose stories by Robert E. Howard, William Hope Hodgson (2), Clark Ashton Smith, and Perceval Landon, brought to vivid life by Gianni's intricate, fine-art illustrations. Gorgeous work, recalling an earlier period of superlative illustration on stories like Fu-Manchu and Sherlock Holmes, by the likes of Joseph Clement Coll, and J.R. Flanagan (who counted Jim Steranko as a big fan). Actually, Gary's art here has a lot in common with Berni Wrightson's fine-line work on projects like the Frankenstein portfolios and graphic novel, a high point of Berni's career. Both Gianni and Berni were inspired by the same master of illustration!

Gary peoples his pages with a cast of thousands...you can see that he really went the extra mile to give these stories a vintage feel, and intricate detail that you rarely find in comics today. This is a great collection, offering hours of great reading.
