- Full Description
This full-color graphic novel adapts one of the Dunk and Egg novellas from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms... a prequel to A Game of Thrones. Westeros is eerily peaceful. King Aerys I sits on the Iron Throne. Yet beneath the surface, tensions linger sixteen years after a failed rebellion. Hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his precocious boy squire, Egg, secretly a Prince of House Targaryen, are nearly starving, riding north for Winterfell. Lured off the Kingsroad by a wedding feast—and an unusually lucrative tournament -- they are soon deep in palace intrigue and a new revolution...and violent death.
The champion jouster will claim a rare trophy indeed: a dragon’s egg. Ser Duncan, always better in a melee, would be satisfied with a hot meal, a cup of wine, and a purse full of coins. But a treasonous plot is more likely to hatch before another dragon ever stretches its wings. And someone’s on to Egg's hidden identity. Then a mystery knight with designs on an even bigger prize soon throws the entire affair into chaos.
This begins as a fascinating new look at life on the road with a poverty-stricken knight and squire in the years before what we know in The Game of Thrones. Then it proceeds to nicely detail the lively competition and head-busting violence of a wedding-day tournament, much like we've seen so often in Prince Valiant. But this is Westeros, and this is George R.R. Martin--so duplicity and bloodshed, greed and ambition are just below the surface, and our innocent pair are soon to become an integral part of the cast.
Well drawn and a very complex story that bears re-reading to get all the nuance and connections to A Game of Thrones.
“Every wedding needs a singer, and every tourney needs a mystery knight.”
