Special Order - takes 3-4 weeks! 1953-56. Highly Recommended. By Walt Kelly. In Volume 3, the insidious wildcat Simple J. Malarkey was the comic version of anti-Communist senator, Joseph McCarthy. A Providence, Rhode Island newspaper threatened to drop the strip if Malarkey’s face were to appear in it again. Kelly’s response? He had Malarkey appear again but put a bag over the character’s head. In Volume 4 we see the exit of Simple J. Malarkey, roughly coinciding with with the exit of Senator Joseph McCarthy. We also see a parody of the President Dwight D. Eisenhower/Adlai Stevenson spectacle and a pig equivalent of Nikita Khrushchev.

In volume 4, we are treated to a new foreword by Neil Gaiman, an introduction by Mark Evanier with three full page pieces from original art, plus the full color original painting for Pogo's Newsweek cover in 1955!! Plus...in "Swamp Talk," R.C. Harvey actually annotates strip after strip, putting some of the more obscure humor references from the time in context for current readers. It's an amazing piece of work covering 15 pages of the book. Pretty cool.

In addition to presenting Pogo strips complete and in order for the first time anywhere (many of them once again scanned from original syndicate proofs, for their crispest and most detailed appearance ever), Vol. 4 also contains all 104 Sunday strips from these two years, presented in lush full color for the first time since their original appearance in Sunday sections 60 years ago.
