We never before handled this bound set of both issues, and now they are at a super-bargain price. But only while our limited supply lasts. Starting off with a seminal early cover by Steve Ditko, herein you'll find some very, VERY strange pre-code tales from the fledgling Charlton Comics Group. Both feature long, fully illustrated 16-page introductions by comics expert Lawrence Watt-Evans that puts this strangest of titles into context with its 1950s counterparts.

This is one of the must-have titles outside the EC Horror canon--it pushed the envelope with stories of severed heads, headlights, and injury-to-eye. Issue #9 is in Seduction of the Innocent!

For me, the highlight here is an outstanding new essay by Watt-Evans, where he makes the strongest possible case that EC neither started the horror comics trend, nor were they slavishly imitated by all publishers. He carefully outlines the entire history of pre-code horror, profusely illustrated with related covers, from all the publishers.

The Thing is a perfect example of what he discusses. What it lacked in EC-level storytelling and A-list artists, it made up in bizarre tales, quirky art, and violence not seen in most ECs. Even among comics horror titles, The Thing is in a category of its own. And few if any stories here have ever been reprinted.

Stories include "The Creature from Dimension 2-K-31," "Hellfire of Doom," "The Red Death," "El Torro Diablo," "The Petrified Ghost," "Harmony of Horror," "Twins of Doom," and "The Warlock of London." And don't miss "Spiderman and His Web of Doom!"

They even imitated Avon, with cool black & white contents pages on the inside front cover of each issue. Above average artwork by Bob Forgione (who did many covers and lots of stories), John Belfi, Al Fago, Albert Tyler, several unidentified creators, as well as Dick Giordano. And in Volume Two: early Steve Ditko!
