- Full Description
Gianni's self-published collection of sketches for the George R.R. Martin bestselling novel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Three color prelims and 120 pencil drawings, many preliminary drawings that were never used, others changed and developed into the book's illustrations. Gary has generously done a very small pencil drawing in each of our copies. Full page as well as multiple images of swordfights, characters, encampments, a wedding, a diminutive female archer, royalty, and much more.
Here from Gary's own introduction to the book, a few words that nicely sum up his goals: "The spirit of romantic heroism is alive and well throughout the pages of George R.R. Martin's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The story relates the adventures of a young knight and his wily squire in Westeros. It's a prequel of sorts to the Song of Fire and Ice series [A Game of Thrones]. "
"I found the author's work stoking my own fires and I scribbled hundreds of sketches to accompany his text. Many of the more substantial roughs included here are from my sketchbook and proved to be the basis for the finished pen and ink illustrations. A typical page of my Seven Kingdoms sketchbook provides an example of how an illustrator "thinks with a pencil" much in the same way a writer jots down notes and ideas for a first draft. Some of these preliminary drawings were immediately discarded and others were utilized quite faithfully from concept to finish."
Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three prequel novellas to Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, featuring a young, naïve but courageous "hedge" knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire called Egg.
Gary Gianni has drawn characters from Solomon Kane and Conan, to a major run on the Prince Valiant Sunday Page for eight years, and most recently a stand-alone Hellboy graphic novel. His work is in the tradition of fine line illustrators like Franklin Booth and Joseph Clement Coll, with the same kind of heroic drama as his other inspirations of Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth.
