- Full Description
Two defeated samurai are exiled from Japan and come to America to start anew. Ending up in Crow Territory in North America, they rescue a young mother and her baby, encounter Crazy Horse, chief of the Oglalas, and their battle skills quickly win the respect of Indians on both sides of the war. One is an expert at ju jitsu and prefers a six-shooter; the other is a master archer and swordsman. Moebius himself introduces this series of stories with the highest praise. With film westerns on the wane, here he finds the classic American western has found a home.
The samurai and the Oglalas soon form a profound friendship and respect for each other's cultures. This respect was felt so deeply that the two Japanese travelers end up fighting alongside the Oglalas at the infamous encounter at Little Bighorn.
I'm very impressed so far, having read less than half of the book. The art is realistic and very well done; the characters are real people. The two warriors respect even their enemies, and avoid killing whenever possible. But they come to realize the plight of the Indians, as the white man is destroying the buffalo herds that keep them alive on their nomadic journey, in order to subdue these warriors.
